Natural affinities

Saturday, we played in Munich, home of my record label ECM. The day before, arriving from Paris, we had the chance to meet up with ECM founder Manfred Eicher. Since we met for the first time some fifteen years ago, I have learnt so much from him. I’ve spoken about his exceptional work in the studio before, and also about his qualities when it comes to composing a track order, finding a title and an image for a record. And even if I hadn’t, everyone knows about all that: an impressive catalogue of more than thousand releases, extensive worldwide coverage of his work and an ever growing collection of accolades are testimony to it.

When you’re an artist working with Manfred Eicher, his support in all the phases of the creative process makes a huge difference. And oh do I love all the phases of the process. There’s really not many people I let in when developing new material. I know pretty much where I want to go, and I enjoy solitude when circling in on things. And then, once in a while, when the timing is right, there’s a word or two from him. And his timing is always right.

Saturday night, at Unterfahrt, I was with the band. Making music. And the audience was with us.

Next up: our first concert in Fürstentum Liechtenstein, at the Jazztage Eschen, on Friday. We hope you will be there with us.
