suddenly you want more

As I am in the phase of developing what is to come, listening, taking things in, beholding and going to hear and see live music is very dear to me. In doing so, I am not so much looking for inspiration for my own music, as I am just looking for others doing their own thing. It makes me happy and courageous and hopeful to hear someone who developed something very specific, very personal.

Yesterday, I visited the Paléo festival for the first time, to see the very cool Jeanne Added. I heard her live earlier this year, in a small club close to Geneva, and loved it. Her voice stands out, and her performance is strong and fragile at the same time, and very touching. I also know the work she did earlier on the French jazz scene (singing Mingus’ Reincarnation Of A Lovebird, one of my favourite compositions, for example), and it is quite a change in musical direction that she has chosen for. “What I’m doing now is my direction”, is what she told me when I asked her about it after the fantastic concert. Check out her new record Be Sensational, and listen to the beautiful track Suddenly, and hear her sing the line suddenly you want more.

I then went on to see Bill Frisell‘s group in quite a different setting – the stunning Cour de l’Hôtel-de-Ville in Geneva.  The city has a very impressive summer festival all of its own, featuring an eclectic mix of genres.

Live music. Yes, I really love it.
