Do you look out to-night? The moon rides like a girl through a topaz town.
Emily Dickinson (fragment from a letter)
If there is one sentence that describes best how I feel when I sing, it probably is this very sentence, written so long ago by Emily Dickinson. It somehow puts into words so well how I intend to live my life. I really love her letters just as much as I love her poems. After having set to music many of Dickinson’s poems for The Gift, I also relied on the brilliance of her words for a radio play I did for Swiss national radio SRF, together with Claude Pierre Salmony. The play contains composed fragments, as well as spoken parts – featuring the beautiful voices of my students – the Vokal-Ensemble of the Lucerne music university – as well as the mastery of my colleague Lauren Newton and upcoming German actress Marie Jung for the spoken parts.
The play received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Prix Marulić in 2013.
I just got word that SRF will be broadcasting Der Gaukler Tag again tomorrow, you can find details here.
